My New Attitude

' ... excellent and within the tradition of great straight ahead modern jazz. It's a pleasure to continue to hear jazz like this and at such a high artistic level.' - Gary Alderman, WORT-FM, Madison, WI '...a writer of beautiful and swinging melodies...Paul Silbergleit is not only a talent who has come to play, he has something of substance to talk about.' - Bobby Jackson, WCPN-FM, Cleveland, OH My New Attitude is the latest release from jazz guitarist and composer Paul Silbergleit. Hard-swinging, melodic, and straight-ahead in style, he bears the influence of figures such as Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, and Kenny Burrell. The Milwaukee-based artist has performed with Melvin Rhyne, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, Jack McDuff, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. His 1996 debut CD, Silberglicity, made it onto the jazz charts with nationwide airplay. My New Attitude has a whole new line-up of musicians, and, like the previous album, a whole lot of original material. The compositions present a colorful variety of moods and textures, and the personnel on this release make a particularly cohesive performing unit together: Tenor saxophonist Scott Burns resides in Chicago, where he often plays with reknowned figures such as Jodie Christian and Ira Sullivan. In addition to his harmonic, rhythmic, and timbral command of the modern jazz saxophone, he's a very sharp reader (and learner of new compositions). Pianist Steve Einerson, like numerous young pianists from the Milwaukee area, had David Hazeltine as his mentor, before the latter moved back to New York. Now in the Big Apple himself, he has performed with Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, and Marlena Shaw, among others, and continues to show great creativity and control on the keys. Bassist Charles Ledvina, having lived and played in various Wisconsin locations as well as in New York, now makes the Chicago area his home base. His list of playing credits is impressive, including such luminaries as Barry Harris and Lionel Hampton. He is one of the very best around at getting a full, warm, acoustic tone on the instrument, while making everything he plays, whether accompanying or soloing, genuinely melodic. Drummer Brian Ritter was a smokin' player right out of high school, and fast became a first-call cat in Milwaukee (and now in Chicago). At a young age, he's been the choice of bandleaders such as Frank Morgan, David Hazeltine, and Brian Lynch. He has a very crisp, firm sound, and precise approach to time that make a band come together well. In addition to his performance career, Silbergleit is a very active educator, on faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music as well as at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, WI). His teaching experience ranges from elementary to Elderhostel, including guitar lessons, ensemble coaching, and jazz history and appreciation.
